Country codes are used when a person wants to dial an international phone number. Exit codes are used when someone wants to make a call out of his country.

To make an international phone call, the user must dial the international direct dialing number. Some countries have more than one number, which also depends on the carrier type or service. Next, the caller dials the country code, then the area code. From there, the caller can input the number he is attempting to call.

CountryCode.org has a list of country codes in addition to instructions for placing an international call.
