Is Denmark a country?

Denmark is a country in northern Europe. It is considered one of the Scandinavian countries, of which it is the smallest. Denmark is comprised of a peninsula attached to the European mainland, as well as around 400 islands in the North Sea surrounding it.

The capital and largest city in Denmark is Copenhagen, which is located on Zealand, a large island due east of mainland Denmark. Copenhagen was founded as a fishing village in the 10th century and became the capital of the country in the 15th century. Denmark has been a member of the European Union since 1973, making it one of the first countries outside of the Inner Six (Belgium, France, West Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands) to join.
