The abbreviation "CPS" stands for the Crown Prosecution Service. It is an authority responsible for prosecuting criminal offences in England and Wales. It is part of the government of the United Kingdom and is headed by the director of public prosecutions (DPP).
The DPP works under the superintendence of the attorney general.The CPS offers legal advice to the police, decides if a suspect should face criminal charges and conducts prosecutions. It is also responsible for appeals and extradition proceedings. It can prosecute in Magistrates' Court and the Crown Court. It consists of 13 geographical areas. The CPS was founded in 1880, with Sir John Maule appointed as the first DPP.
