The Creole priest who led the fight for Mexican independence is Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. Father Hidalgo told the people that there must be a revolution against the Spanish in 1810 and then proceeded to lead it as an activist.
He announced his belief in a revolutionary plan by ringing a church bell on the morning of September 16, 1810. Unfortunately, they were unable to capture the capital city though they were able to take over other major cities in Mexico. However, Mexico would become independent soon enough and the country would always call its anniversary as an independent country on September 16, 1810.
