What is a crocodile skink?

Commonly kept as pets, crocodile skinks are lizards that hail from New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago and the Solomon Islands. There are eight species of crocodile skinks. Most are small, between 2.5 inches and 7 inches long. They have a lifespan of approximately five years.

Very little is known about how crocodile skinks act in the wild, because they are extremely shy animals. Crocodile skinks in captivity tend to be more active at night. A female crocodile skink over 3 years old is old enough to reproduce, and she lays a single egg about every five weeks if there is a mate present.
