What is the niche of a crocodile?

Crocodiles are ambush hunters. Their diets include dragonflies, fish, turtles, frogs, birds and mammals. The size of the crocodile determines the size of its prey.

Crocodiles are closely related to alligators but are strictly tropical and as a group are more tolerant of saltwater. There are 14 species of crocodile. The largest, the saltwater crocodile and the Nile crocodile, are apex predators and are quite aggressive. All crocodiles are capable of extremely fast strikes and have powerful jaws. They hunt by seizing prey that has ventured too close and dragging it below the water to drown. Crocodiles cannot chew, so their prey is either swallowed whole or torn into large pieces for consumption.
