What is the currency of Antarctica?

There is no official currency of Antarctica. Antarctica is not a country, so it does not have the government structure necessary to issue money. Antarctic outposts use the currency of whatever nation owns the site, Lonely Planet says.

Most bases in Antarctica accept U.S. dollars as well as the operating country's currency, according to Lonely Planet. As of 2006, 30 countries maintain facilities in Antarctica.

There is a Bank of Antarctica, but the store warns visitors that the products it sells are only souvenirs. Bills from the Bank of Antarctica are not accepted anywhere in the world as real currency, have no real value and cannot be traded at currency exchanges.
