According to About.com, Columbus Day in the United States is the second Monday in October as of 2014. Wikipedia says that observing Columbus Day on the second Monday in October began in 1970.
According to the National Archives, Columbus Day is a federal holiday as of 2014. However, ABC News explains that some states have changed Columbus Day to favor observances of Native American peoples. For example, South Dakota observes Native American Day. Other federal holidays are New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, George Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
