Is Columbus Day a federal holiday?

In 1937, President Franklin Roosevelt established Columbus Day as a federal holiday. However, Columbus Day had already been unofficially celebrated in the United States since the 18th century.

The 2014 Federal Holidays Calendar states that Columbus day is celebrated on the second Monday in October each year. The holiday was first established to recognize the day in 1492 that Christopher Columbus unexpectedly landed in what is now North America. Today, Columbus Day has also evolved to be a celebration of Italian-American heritage due to Columbus' Italian background, and certain parts of the United States celebrate with parades, fairs and colorful costumes.
