Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a federal holiday that is celebrated the third Monday of January each year. The bill calling for this holiday became law in 1983, and the holiday was first officially observed in 1986.

In some states, MLK Day is combined with other holidays. Arizona and New Hampshire celebrate it with Civil Rights Day, and Idaho combines MLK Day with Human Rights Day. In Wyoming, MLK Day is known as Wyoming Equality Day.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in 1968 after becoming the youngest person in history to win the Nobel Peace Prize. He was known for his nonviolent protests and efforts to reach racial equality.
