How is the Daytona 500 starting order decided?

A combination of qualifying laps and qualifying races determine the starting order of the Daytona 500. The cars with the two fastest laps on qualifying day earn the first two places, and the results of two 150-lap qualifying races determine the remaining spots.
The two 150-lap qualifying races, known as the Budweiser Duels from 2013 to 2015, are held the Thursday before the race and determine most of the starting order. The 35 cars with the most earners' points in the previous season are guaranteed spots in the 43-car field but still compete in the qualifying races to determine starting position. The 43rd and final position is given to a past champion who was unable to qualify.
