What is the traditional start time at the Daytona 500?

As of 2015, the start time of the Daytona 500 is 1:30 p.m. EST. The original start time of the race was 12:15 p.m. EST. It started at 12:15 p.m. EST from 1979 to 2000, when race organizers decided to move back the start time to accommodate West Coast viewers.

From 2000 to 2009, the start time for the Daytona 500 was later in the day. The latest planned start time was 3:30 p.m. EST in 2009. In 2010 the start time moved to 1:00 p.m. EST in order to return to a late afternoon finish. The race usually takes between four and five hours to complete.
