NASCAR moved the start time for the Daytona 500 up 2.5 hours to around 1 p.m. beginning in 2010. The drivers in the 57th Daytona 500, held in 2015, got the order to start their engines at 1:19 p.m. Eastern time and took the green flag at 1:31 p.m.
Since its inception in 1959, the Daytona 500 has been a 500-mile race of 200 laps held at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. The start time for the race moved up twice prior to the 2010 adjustment. In both 2005 and 2007, NASCAR adjusted the race's start time to ensure that the race finished at nighttime under the track's lights.
