Why is the Dead Sea called the Dead Sea?

The Dead Sea takes its name from the high salt content that makes it impossible for animal life to flourish in its waters. At 33.7 percent salinity, the Dead Sea is roughly 8.6 times saltier than the ocean, earning it the nickname "The Salt Sea."

Stretching 42 miles in length and 11 miles across at its widest point, the Dead Sea is not a sea but is the world's largest hypersaline lake. The body of water is bordered by the countries of Jordan to the east and Israel to the west. The lake is 1,237 feet deep and represents the planet's lowest land elevation at roughly 1,400 feet below sea level.
