The Dead Sea is a landlocked salt lake located between Israel and Jordan. The eastern shore belongs to Jordan, and the southern half of the western shore belongs to Israel. The Dead Sea is also known as the Salt Sea and is about 1,300 feet below sea level.
This makes it the lowest elevation and body of water on the planet. The Jordan River flows into the Dead Sea from the north. The surface area of the Dead Sea is approximately 394 square miles. It is located in a desert, and there is very little rainfall. Since the lake has such a high density of salt, bathers in the Dead Sea float easily on the water. Only bacteria can live in the Dead Sea due to its salinity.
