The average depth of the Indian Ocean is about 13,000 feet. At its deepest point, the Indian Ocean is just under 24,000 feet deep. It is the world's third-largest ocean.

The Indian Ocean is known for its currents, which produce the monsoon rains experienced every year in many Asian nations. It is also the home of several key canals and straits that connect with smaller bodies of water. Part of the Indian Ocean was reallocated in 2000 when the International Hydropgraphic Association decided to create a fifth ocean. Including all of its sub bodies of water, the Indian Ocean encompasses roughly 68 million square kilometers.
