Denmark's national flag is a white cross on a red background. It is called the "Dannebrog," which means the "flag of the Danes" or "red flag." The Danish flag's first appearance occurred on June 15, 1219, at the Battle of Lyndanisse in Estonia, according to local tradition.
Its adoption date of 1219 makes the Danish flag one of the oldest national flags in the world. The white cross on the flag of Denmark represents Christianity and is used on the flags of other Nordic countries, such as Norway, Iceland and Finland. The vertical portion of the cross is shifted to the side closest to the flagpole, and the edges extend to the flag's four sides.
