What does the New Mexico flag look like?

The New Mexico state flag features a dark yellow background with a red Zia sun in the middle. A symbol of the Zia Pueblo Indians, the sun features a circle in the middle with four sets of four rays coming out of the circle in each of the cardinal directions.

New Mexico adopted the current flag design in 1925. The Daughters of the American Revolution held a contest to design a new flag for the state. Archaeologist and physician Harry Mera designed the current New Mexico flag for the competition. The yellow and red colors that make up the simple flag design come from Spain. They are the official colors of Queen Isabella and made their way to North America during Spanish colonization.
