How do you design a free-form swimming pool?

Design a free-form swimming pool by choosing the shape, material, enhancements and landscaping. Free-form pools are not bound by typical pool design patterns, and you can integrate their design with the aspects of any space or setting.
- Choose the shape
Consider the space you have to work with when planning a free-form swimming pool. Conform the shape to match the aesthetics and limitations of the landscape.
- Select the materials
Select materials to match your needs, your budget and the weather conditions of the area. Concrete is durable, versatile and popular. However, its installation is time-consuming, difficult and expensive. Vinyl lining on a steel frame is easier and cheaper to install than concrete, but without sufficient care, the lining is easy to puncture. Choose a prefabricated fiberglass shell as the easiest and cheapest option.
- Add enhancements
Personalize your free-form swimming pool by adding enhancements such as waterfalls, fountains, bridges, water slides, islands, grottoes and other distinctive features.
- Design the surrounding landscape
Choose landscaping features to match the shape of your pool and the surrounding terrain. Add low-maintenance plants for privacy and beauty. However, avoid plants that have extensive root systems or shed leaves or needles. Install safety fencing and outdoor lighting around pools, especially when small children are likely to frequent the area. Add a concrete, stone or brick patio for sunbathing.
