How do you determine a naturalization date?

For immigrants seeking U.S. citizenship, the earliest naturalization date is either three or five years from the date that their green cards were issued. The number of years is determined by the marital status of the immigrant, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Naturalization is the process by which an alien resident of the United States becomes a citizen. A resident who is married to a U.S. citizen and meets the requirements for citizenship is able to apply for naturalization three years from the date on his green card, explains U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. All other eligible residents are able to apply five years from that date. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services provides an online checklist on its website to assist in determining eligibility for citizenship.
