On June 5, 1942, the Japanese naval fleet was defeated by the U.S. Navy at Midway Atoll in the Pacific Ocean in a battle that came to be known as the Battle of Midway. The Japanese attacked Midway Atoll in an attempt to force a response from American forces.
By destroying the U.S. Naval fleet, the Japanese would have controlled the Pacific theater, giving them an opportunity to attack the West Coast of the United states and Hawaii. During the early hours of June 4, a Japanese aircraft carrier attacked Midway but met with resistance from U.S. forces stationed there.
