The Battle of Thermopylae took place in Thermopylae, Greece in 480 BCE. It was fought between the Persian empire of Xerxes and an alliance of ancient Greek city-states, led by the Spartan King Leonidas. The Persians won the battle and, as a result, gained control of Boeotia.
Thermopylae is a mountain pass in northern Greece near the Aegean Sea. The pass features hot sulphur springs, from which its name is derived. In antiquity, the pass was named Malis, after a Greek tribe that resided in the area. Due to its strategic location, it has been the site of several battles.
