Carl Hiaasen's novel "Hoot" was written in 2002, and won a Newberry Honor award in 2003. It tells the story of a misfit high school boy who helps stop the development of a pancake house at a site where burrowing owls are nesting.

The cause of environmentalism has been central to Hiaasen's writing since his early days as a columnist and reporter for the Miami Herald. His popular series of Florida-based detective novels often involve environmental themes. "Hoot" was his first book targeted at young adult readers. Since "Hoot," Hiassen has continued to write books for young adults, including "Flush" and "Chomp," all set in Florida, and all dealing with environmental issues.
