Ferdinand Magellan sailed for Portugal originally but went to Spain in 1517 to sail for Spain. Magellan was born in Portugal and only left for Spain because the Portuguese king would not grant his petition to sail to the Spice Islands.
Magellan received funding from Spain and sailed for this country until his death in 1521. He is most remembered for the Spice Islands journey that he made for Spain. The journey entailed 270 men and five ships, though only 18 men and a single ship returned. Magellan lost his life on this trip, but his efforts proved that the globe was round and could be circled on water.
