George Washington spent his childhood growing up on Ferry Farm, located opposite Fredericksburg, Virg., on the Rappahannock River. Born as one of the nine children of Augustine Washington, George Washington spent eight years between ages 7 and 15 being home schooled in various subjects.
Augustine Washington passed away when George was aged 11. His half-brother, Lawrence Washington, then became his legal guardian. George Washington was further educated on colonial culture by the wife of his half-brother, Anne Fairfax. At the age of 16, George Washington traveled as part of a surveying party to the then-uncharted areas west of Virginia where he was later appointed official surveyor.
