Former President James Monroe had four siblings. He had a sister, Elizabeth Buckner, and three brothers whose names were Andrew, Spence and Joseph Jones. James Monroe was the fifth president of the United States elected initially in 1816 and re-elected in 1820 when he ran unopposed.
James Monroe was born April 28th, 1758 and married Elizabeth Kortright. They had two daughters, Eliza and Maria Hester. Monroe rose to the rank of major while in the Continental Army from 1776 to 1778. In 1803 he was sent to negotiate the Louisiana Purchase. After his presidency, he retired to Virginia and then moved to New York after his wife's death. James Monroe died on July 4, 1831.
