While first wife Mary Sue Whitthauer did file for divorce, she claims it was after Jimmy Dean abandoned her in April 1990. Whittauer sought divorce when Dean moved out of the couple's home in New Jersey; the couple was married for over 40 years and had three children together.

According to a People Magazine report, Mary Sue filed for divorce on grounds that Dean was mentally cruel, habitually drunk and committed adultery, accusing Dean of holding an affair with country music singer Donna Meade. Once the divorce was finalized, Dean married Meade; they remained married until Dean's death in 2010.
