Sacagawea was made a wife of a French-Canadian trapper at the age of 12. She was the daughter of a Shoshone chief, and she was kidnapped by an enemy tribe who sold her to the trapper.
She played an important role as a Shoshone interpreter and was the only woman on the Lewis and Clark expedition. She was invited to join the expedition in 1804 as an interpreter. In 1805, while on the expedition, she gave birth to a son but still proved to be helpful despite having a baby to look after. In 1812, after leaving the expedition and a few months after giving birth to a daughter, Sacagawea reportedly died at Fort Manuel.
