Where are the doldrums?

The doldrums are the still air or light breezes found over the equator to about five to 18 degrees north and south latitudes. They are part of the prevailing wind systems of the earth. The climate around the doldrums is generally warm and rainy.
Ironically, the term "doldrums" also refers to an area that's subject to gusty winds, storms and hurricanes. This is because the air moves high into the atmosphere and causes turbulence.
Doldrums is an informal term used by sailors, whose wind-powered ships were often becalmed in the waters. The scientific name for the doldrums is the intertropical convergence zone.
