A Dun & Bradstreet Number, or D-U-N-S Number, is a free, nine-digit number assigned to identify a person's physical business location. D-U-N-S stands for Data Universal Number System. As of April 2015, any business seeking a federal government grant or contract must have a D-U-N-S Number.
To obtain a D-U-N-S Number from Dun & Bradstreet, an applicant must provide a legal name, the name and address of the business headquarters, the business' common name and physical and mailing addresses, if they are not the same as the headquarters' address. The applicant must also provide the number of employees at the business location, whether the business is home-based, and a contact name, title and telephone number.
