What are dust mites?

Dust mites are microscopic bugs that are mainly found in congregating areas of a home, including sofas, mattresses, chairs and pet beds. Because dust mites survive off of dead human and pet skin cells, they can also live on a car's steering wheel, cup holders or seats.
Because dust mites do not sting, bite or bury themselves into the flesh of humans or animals, they are not classified as parasites. However, a dust mite's fecal matter and shed bodily remnants are a leading cause of asthma and allergies, according to Environment, Health and Safety Online. Symptoms of dust mite allergies include hay fever, facial pressure, coughing and frequent awakening.
