Some of the duties required of a housekeeper include disposing of trash, sweeping, making beds and doing the laundry. These and other duties may vary, depending on the place of employment.
It is a housekeeper's duty to maintain a clean and tidy living or working environment. Housekeepers may work in a residential or commercial setting, and employers typically have their own standards that a housekeeper must uphold.
Housekeepers in a domestic setting may perform the following duties:
- Run errands
- Polish silverware
- Care for the household pets
- Keep groceries stocked
- Answer the phone and take messages
- Care for the children
- Wash dishes and keep the kitchen clean
Housekeepers working in a commercial setting such as in a hotel have a different set of responsibilities.
- Clean corridors, lobbies and other public areas
- Replace dirty linens and towels with clean ones
- Make sure all appliances are in good working order
- Turn mattresses on a regular basis
- Restock the room with fresh supplies such as shampoo and drinking glasses
- Respond to housekeeping issues such as spills or broken glasses
- Deliver requested items such as extra pillows and blankets to guest rooms.
Whether in the home or a commercial workplace, housekeepers must have an attention to detail, be able to plan and execute plans as needed, have a high energy level and be able to stand on their feet for extended periods of time.
