What are the duties of a house keeper?

Some of the duties required of a housekeeper include disposing of trash, sweeping, making beds and doing the laundry. These and other duties may vary, depending on the place of employment.

It is a housekeeper's duty to maintain a clean and tidy living or working environment. Housekeepers may work in a residential or commercial setting, and employers typically have their own standards that a housekeeper must uphold.

Housekeepers in a domestic setting may perform the following duties:

• Run errands
• Polish silverware
• Care for the household pets
• Keep groceries stocked
• Answer the phone and take messages
• Care for the children
• Wash dishes and keep the kitchen clean

Housekeepers working in a commercial setting such as in a hotel have a different set of responsibilities.

• Clean corridors, lobbies and other public areas
• Replace dirty linens and towels with clean ones
• Make sure all appliances are in good working order
• Turn mattresses on a regular basis
• Restock the room with fresh supplies such as shampoo and drinking glasses
• Respond to housekeeping issues such as spills or broken glasses
• Deliver requested items such as extra pillows and blankets to guest rooms.

Whether in the home or a commercial workplace, housekeepers must have an attention to detail, be able to plan and execute plans as needed, have a high energy level and be able to stand on their feet for extended periods of time.
