What is the earliest map of the Pennsylvania Turnpike?

The earliest publicly available map of the Pennsylvania Turnpike was issued by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission in 1940. The turnpike opened in October 1940 and ran from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh.

The original Pennsylvania Turnpike measured 160 miles long and was considered the first superhighway in the United States. The route included 11 toll plazas, 10 service plazas and seven tunnels constructed in part from abandoned South Penn Railroad tunnels. The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission was created in 1937 and was responsible for issuing official turnpike road maps. Large oil companies issued additional early turnpike road maps as a means of advertising during the industry's boom in Pennsylvania.
