There are five Egyptian words that refer to the soul because the ancient Egyptians believed the soul was comprised of five different parts. These words are "ren," "ba," "ka," "sheut" and "ib."
"Ren" refers to the name that is given to a person at their birth. Egyptians believed this was part of the soul and that as long as the name was spoken, the soul would live.
"Ba" is everything that makes a person unique and Egyptians believed that this part of the soul lives on after the body dies. "Ka" is the Egyptian concept of the vital spark that gives life to a person. "Sheut" refers to a person's shadow which is always present. "Ib" is the metaphysical heart of a person.
