What does "EL PAIS" refer to?

The Spanish phrase "el país" translates to English as "the country." "El País" is also the name of several Spanish-language newspapers, as well as the former name of the highest level of competition in Uruguayan soccer.

The highest-circulated daily newspaper in Spain is called "El País," a tabloid-style paper based in Madrid. There is also an "El País" newspaper based out of Cali, Colombia. Another "El País" newspaper is published in the Tarija Department in southern Bolivia.

"El País" is the name of one of Uruguay's national newspapers as well. Uruguay's highest level of soccer competition was formerly called "Copa El País" because the Uruguayan newspaper assisted in the creation of the league.
