What does an elevated bilirubin test result represent?

An elevated level of bilirubin can indicate liver disease or liver damage, according to the Mayo Clinic. Normal levels are 0.1 to 1 mg/dL for total bilirubin, which is comprised of both direct and indirect bilirubin. A level of between 0 and 0.3 mg/dL is normal for direct bilirubin.

When bilirubin in the blood is elevated, it indicates that the liver is not clearing bilirubin like it should. This can be caused by several problems, including blockage in the bile ducts or a deficiency in the enzyme that breaks down bilirubin in the body, which is a condition known as Gilbert’s syndrome. Abnormal bilirubin levels can also cause jaundice. Bilirubin levels can be affected by certain foods and medicines, according to the Mayo Clinic.
