The main enemies of the eastern water dragon include the brown tree, common death adder, lowlands copperhead, red-bellied black and eastern brown snakes. Cats, dogs and foxes are also known to threaten the species. Predatory birds such as butcherbirds, currawongs and kookaburras often prey on hatchlings and juveniles.

The tree-climbing native of Australia prefers to lay on branches overhanging water habitats. When it senses danger, the eastern water dragon drops into the water for up to 30 minutes while waiting for the danger to pass. Long, powerful legs and a strong tail assist the reptile in both swimming after prey and eluding predators.
