What is the energy molecule of a cell called?

The energy molecule of the cell is called adenosine 5-triphosphate, or ATP, according to Scitable by Nature Education. ATP stores and transfers energy in cells.

ATP is made up of an adenine base, a ribose sugar and 3 phosphate groups. When one phosphate group is removed in a process called "hydrolysis," energy is released and ATP is converted to adenosine diphosphate, or ADP. This energy is transferred to other molecules to enable metabolic reactions within the cell. ADP can be converted back to ATP by obtaining a phosphate group. Similar to storing money in a bank, ATP is stored in the cell for use when needed.
