"ENIAC" is an acronym that stands for Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer, which was the first computer that was a programmable general-purpose electronic digital computer. It was built in the United States during World War II.
In a government-funded project at the Moore School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, John Mauchly, J. Presper Eckert, Jr. and other colleagues were tasked with creating an all-electronic computer. The specific capabilities of this first electronic computer fell short of the expectations for a universally useful computer. Even though instructions had to be manually inputted, the computer then ran at electronic speeds.
