What is extended breastfeeding?

Extended breastfeeding is breastfeeding that continues past an infant's first birthday, according to Mayo Clinic. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that a mother breastfeed for the first 12 months of a child's life, and continue beyond then if it's mutually beneficial for both mother and baby.
Although many mothers choose to discontinue breastfeeding after the first year, the World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding up to age 2 or beyond. Mothers choose extended breastfeeding because it extends the period of time in which a baby receives the benefits of breast milk. Those benefits include balanced nutrition and a boost to the immune system, advises the Mayo Clinic.
