What is an F1 Goldendoodle?

F1 goldendoodles are the result of breeding a purebred golden retriever to a purebred poodle. Puppies in an F1 litter may vary considerably in size and coat type.
Breeders of hybrid or "designer" dogs sometimes use back crosses or multi-generational crosses to produce a more consistent type of dog. A back cross consists of an F1 hybrid being bred to a purebred of one of the parent types. For example, an F1 goldendoodle can be bred to a poodle to produce puppies that are 75 percent poodle and 25 percent golden retriever; these puppies would be more likely to have a poodle-like coat than F1 goldendoodles. Multi-generational crosses involve breeding the F1 and succeeding generations to one another while selecting for desired traits.
