The fox is a member of the taxonomic family of Canidae. The Canidae family is also known as the dog family. Wolves, coyotes, dogs and jackals are also members of the Canidae family.
Taxonomic classifications are a system used to organize life forms. Organisms are classified into different categories from least to most specific. These taxonomic categories are kingdom, phylum, class, order, genus and species.
All members of the Canidae family belong to the kingdom of Animalia, phylum of Chordata and the class of Mammalia. Only foxes belong to the genus of Vulpes. Within the Vulpes genus, there are twelve different species of foxes.
