A 2014 study by Care.com reported the average cost of a babysitter to be about $13.50 per hour in the United States. However, the rate varies widely dependent upon a number of factors, such as location and experience.

San Francisco, California was the most expensive city, with an hourly rate of $16.55. The least expensive city was Grand Rapids, Michigan, where the hourly rate was $11.31. Families with more than one child paid an extra $2 to $5 per hour for each additional child. Sitters with experience were paid $5 per hour more. A similar study done in 2013 by UrbanSitter showed that nannies typically earn as much as $2 per hour more than babysitters.
