While many people attribute the first automobile to Henry Ford, the first one was actually built in Italy in 1335 by Guido da Vigevano. While this automobile was not powered by a gasoline engine, it used a windmill to drive a series of gears.
The automobile went through a series of evolutions over the course of the next few hundred years, until a Frenchman named Etienne Lenoir patented the first gasoline-powered engine in 1860. This engine had only 1 horsepower and turned at only 100 revolutions per minute. Henry Ford, the man generally attributed with the invention of the car, built his first engine in 1893 and his first car in 1896.
