The first Case XX pocket knife was made in 1889. The Case Brothers, namely William Russel, Jean, John and Andrew Case, manufacture these pocket knives.

John Russel Case formed the company W.R. Case & Sons after his father William Russel, or W.R.. As of 2015, Zippo Manufacturing Company, maker of the famous Zippo windproof lighter, owns the Case Company. These pocket knives are manufactured exclusively in the United States. Some Case knife patterns include the SlimLock, Tiny Trapper, Baby Doc, CopperLock, RussLock and Baby Butterbean. Domestic steel, which is hardened using proprietary heat treatment methods, is used to make the blades.
