The Sting Ray was introduced in 1963. The chassis was designed by Corvette engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov, Bill Mitchell and Larry Shinoda.

The first generation Sting Ray consisted of a ladder frame design, that included features such as independent rear suspension and leaf springs. The body was unique to its time as it had rounded headlights and two-piece rear window, which dubbed it as the "split-window coupe," according to Edmunds.

The powertrain on the first generation Sting Ray was a base 327 V8 engine, which included an output of 250 horsepower. Buyers who purchased the Z06 Sting Ray was given a fuel injected 327 with an increased horsepower rating of 360 horsepower.
