The first Continental Congress was held from Sept. 5 to Oct. 26, 1774 in Philadelphia. Its goal was to discuss the various grievances the colonies had against Great Britain and to make a united statement.
The first Continental Congress marked the first time the colonies acted together as one unit, even though much disagreement existed over how to solve the issues. Delegates from every colony but Georgia attended. Suggested actions ranged from arriving at a peaceful resolution with Great Britain to breaking free from the mother country. Ultimately, the group decided to enforce punitive measures against Great Britain unless it abolished the Intolerable Acts by December 1.
