The first Saint Patrick's Day parade was held in New York City before the American colonies had declared their independence from England and established themselves as the United States. This parade, which was held on March 17, 1762, was organized by Irish members of the British colonial armed forces.
Irish people were a strong presence in New York well before the United States of America was established as a sovereign nation. Initially, many of these immigrants came to America as indentured servants, but as more and more Irish people immigrated to the country, their cultural traditions became an important part of American culture.
