To identify different types of squash, compare the squash to a visual guide, such as the ones found on RealSimple.com, WhatsCookingAmerica.com and Epicurious.com. Most types of squash are identifiable by physical appearance.
Some common varieties of squash are acorn squash, butternut squash, spaghetti squash and kabocha. Acorn squash are usually small and dark green with yellow patches. They are acorn-shaped with shallow ridges. Butternut squash have an elongated pear shape and are usually beige or light orange in color. Spaghetti squash are usually golden yellow in color and uniformly oval-shaped. Kabocha are shaped like small, squat pumpkins. They are dark green with light stripes.
