What is a pregnant onion?

A pregnant onion is a type of onion plant that is easily grown either outside or in indoor pots. Folia specifies that this plant is not edible and may actually be toxic if ingested.
The pregnant onion's scientific name is Ornithogalum longibracteatum. GrowingGuides.com states that the pregnant onion plant gets its name from its unique appearance. It looks like an onion growing in the ground, with part of the bulb showing, but with large, green shoots growing from the top of the bulb. Small bulbs form within the larger bulb, which gives the plant a pregnant appearance. These eventually break free to root and grow into separate plants.
